🥣 Pakistani-Style Moong–Masoor Dal
This comforting Moong–Masoor Dal is a simple homemade Pakistani dish made with a mix of yellow moong and red lentils. It’s lightly spiced, rich with ghee and garlic, and finished with a fragrant garnish—perfect with rice or fresh naan.
🧾 Ingredients
- ½ cup moong dal (yellow lentils)
- ½ cup red lentils (masoor dal)
- 4 cups water
- 1 small onion (chopped)
- 1 tsp garlic paste
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder (dhania powder)
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2–3 tbsp ghee
- 1 tsp whole cumin seeds (jeera)
- A pinch of garam masala
- Fried onions (for garnish)
- Fresh coriander (for garnish)
- A little extra ghee (for topping)
🍲 Method
1. Prepare and cook the lentils
- Wash both lentils thoroughly in a cooker and drain.
- Add 4 cups of water.
- Add red chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric, salt, and chopped onion.
- Bring to a boil, then cover with lid.
- Once the cooker gives a whistle, cook for another 15 minutes.
- Turn off heat and open the cooker.
- Let the dal simmer on low heat.
2. Prepare the garlic ghee tempering
- In a separate pan, heat ghee.
- Add garlic paste and fry until golden brown.
- Pour this hot ghee mixture into the cooked lentils.
3. Final cooking
- Let the dal cook on low heat for another 5 minutes.
- Add a pinch of garam masala and mix well.
4. Garnish and serve
- Dish out the dal.
- Garnish with fried onions and fresh coriander.
- Add a small amount of ghee on top for extra flavor.
- Serve hot with boiled rice, naan, or chapatti.

- Slightly mash the dal for a creamier texture.
- Adjust spices to your taste.
- Ghee adds authentic flavor—don’t skip it if possible.
